The Internet of Things

Simon Chester, writing on slaw.ca, points out an interesting paper published by the ITU: The Internet of Things.

The paper examines what the ITU terms “the next step in ‘always on’ communications,” that is the convergence of several key enabling
technologies (RFID, sensors, embedded intelligence and nanotechnology) will allow inanimate objects to communicate. From the introduction:

Everything from tyres to toothbrushes might soon be in communications range, heralding the dawn of a new era; one in which today’s Internet (of data and people) gives way to tomorrow’s Internet of Things.

The paper, in either PDF or paper form, costs CHF100, but the executive summary is free.
