What many of us have felt for some time is now official: as of the end of 2004 there are more cellular phones than land lines in service in the United States. According to this FCC report, which examines the state of local phone company competition, there are now 177.9M land lines in service and 181.1M cellular ‘lines’ in service.

While other countries have passed this milestone before the US, it is certainly a significant step in the evolution of the wireless industry. It would be nice if the next milestone was some maturity on the part of cell phone users; it’s time we all realized that WE DON’T HAVE TO SHOUT INTO OUR HANDSETS and that some conversations should be saved until we are in private.
