Sony announced an interesting new notebook that adds EDGE to more familiar wireless options. I believe this is the first time that a manufacturer has incorporated EDGE into a computer, although Panasonic and other have been building notebooks with other WWAN options for years now.
The new device offers WPAN (Bluetooth), WLAN (802.11b/g) and WWAN (Cingular’s EDGE network) in a remarkably small package; Sony has also developed a software package which will allow users to switch between the three technologies easily. The new machine should be available next month for about US$2300.
The WWAN service will be provided by Cingular, who offers unmetered nationwide EDGE service for $80/month.
Now, if it only ran a decent OS I might be tempted to abandon my PowerBook.
