The old kitchen had a range which is reasonably new and in pretty good shape, so rather than junk it I called the PG County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They said they’d send a driver and truck to pick up the stove and maybe the fridge, which is older but still works. They didn’t show up when they said they would, and when I called them to tell them I had to leave, they said they’d call me to reschedule. They haven’t called, so the stove now sits under a plastic sheet in the back yard. Seems like such a waste.
On the other hand, I bought a shower door from Durabilt/Bath Decor Center in Rockville. The door is nothing fancy, but the service was excellent. I placed the order with Jorge Salverredy on Feb. 11th, and he called me Monday to schedule the install. He said the crew would arrive today between 1 and 3PM, so you can imagine my surprise when they arrived early! They were in and out in an hour and did a terrific job. I can’t find a Web site for them, but Jorge’s email is showerdoor at gmail dot com, and his phone number is 301-770-4577.
We also bought new shutters, since the original shutters are all gone (save for one pair in the middle of the second floor) and the replacements are cheap and ugly plastic which are half falling off. We bought from Timberlane in suburban Philadelphia. They certainly are not the cheapest shutters you can find, but they are outstanding quality and, perhaps best of all, Timberlane’s customer service was fantastic. I dealt with Craig Rosenwald (crosenwald at timberlane dot com) who walked me through the entire process of choosing the shutters and the hardware. Once the order was placed I got a call from their customer service folks who said the order would ship in late March. When I asked if there was some way to speed up the process they checked their production schedule and said yes, they’d actually be able to build them right away. At no extra charge, by the way. They then called me again on Monday to say they’d be shipping this week, and called this morning to say that they’d actually shipped yesterday, and that I should expect them today. And lo and behold, they arrived!
