Apple Pre-Mac Prices

Posted on Tuesday 15 February 2005

As much as I hate the process of moving I recognize that there are benefits. For example, Gigi found this old Apple price list in our files.

appleprices-thumb.jpgThe price list is dated September 1, 1980, and I was considering buying our first computer. Based on my notes on page 4 of the list, we were looking at an Apple II+ with 48K of RAM plus a 51/4″ floppy disk drive and some software. I eventually bought the hardware but didn’t buy the AppleWriter and ApplePlot software. I don’t remember which word processor we used at first, but I do know that we ran VisiCalc on the II+. I didn’t buy a monitor or printer; I think we used an old TV for a monitor.

A lot of software was available on cassettes since diskette drives were expensive and still scarce, although Apple did a lot to change that. (Sound like a familiar strategy?) The diskettes themselves were expensive: $5 each in boxes of 10, if you bought Apple-branded media. You could buy a “T-Shirt with Apple Logo” for $6, though.

At today’s prices that Apple II+ and diskette drive would have cost almost $4700. You can do somewhat better today.
