I’m sure this will help my concentration. The swim club next door has begun demolition of their 40-year old pool to make way for the New and Improved Model. After the preliminaries such as taking out the underwater lights, removing the deck lighting and diving boards and delivery of the all-important portapotties they’ve now begun in earnest. Ten minutes ago one of those backhoe-mounted jackhammers starting taking apart the old concrete deck. At least they waited until daylight. I wonder how long it’ll take them to finish.
Ultimately the construction, which will have taken two years by the time they’re done, is a good thing; I love having the pool next door. In exchange for five months’ worth of the delightful sounds of kids splashing and laughing we get to live next door to 15 acres of quiet woods with a small pool and parking lot nestled snugly within, inside the Beltway. All year, but especially noticeable when the pool isn’t operating, the woods are full of all manner of critters, from hawks to chipmunks to the occasional whitetail. Delightful neighbor, all year long.
The fact that the pool has a membership which supports the project means the pool is going to be there for a long time. No townhouses, thank God.
Oddly enough, we’ve had more than one prospect say they didn’t want to buy our house because we’re next to the pool. Idiotas. I guess they’ll find paradise next door to a fried chicken carryout cum dry cleaners. It’d be convenient.
[Later] Turns out they’re jackhammering the pool itself, not just the deck. It hasn’t gotten any quieter.
