Can You Drive (Safely) and Talk at the Same Time?

Posted on Friday 20 August 2004

A new study released by the American Enterprise Institute-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies reinforces the concept that driving while phoning is not as dangerous as previously thought. The institute surveyed 7,000 people and found that previous studies have overstated the dangers of having a phone conversation while motoring and have misled some governments into mandating the use of hands-free devices. NHTSA has been arguing against mandatory headset laws for several years. While I have no hope that knee-jerk laws about headsets will be repealed, nor do I expect existing laws which prohibit distracted driving (which have nothing to do with cell phones) will be more vigorously enforced, it is nice to see science being applied to the question.
