NTT DoCoMo’s quarterly revenues dropped 2.5% compared to the same period last year and operating profits fell 13.4% to ¥170B. The company said earlier this year that it expects revenues to decline for the fiscal year ending next March because it has lowered prices for its data services, is offering more discounts and has begun to offer fixed-price plans for its FOMA WCDMA service. DoCoMo blamed the higher costs on larger subsidies for FOMA handsets. Despite the clear implications for long-term profitability the company continues to promote migration from its 2G service to FOMA. Overall subscriber growth has been generally flat for the calendar year, but DoCoMo now has 5M users on FOMA; that’s just under 11% of the company’s overall subscriber base of 46.4M.
