South Korea Bans New Cellular Subscribers, Too

Posted on Monday 7 June 2004

But unlike last week’s total ban by North Korea, this ban is both temporary and a sanction by the government for “unfair business practices.” The Korean Communications Commission has imposed a 40 day ban on the largest carrier in the country, SK Telecom, during which the carrier will not be able to sign up new subscribers. The second and third largest carriers, KTF and LG Telecom, both received 30 day bans, and KT received a 20 day ban. The KCC expects the communications minister to agree to the ban. What exactly were the unfair practices? Illegally subsidizing the cost of handsets, which the KCC says will lead to too much competition.
