Cingular and Sprint Lay Out Next Gen Cellular Plans

Posted on Wednesday 23 June 2004

Sprint acknowledged the rumors in the US market and said it plans to spend US$1B, mostly next year, to deploy 1X EV-DO. Few details were announced, but the company said it will launch service in a few markets this year with the broader launch in 2005. Meanwhile, Cingular said it has issued an RFP for UMTS infrastructure to the major equipment providers. The RFP includes HSDPA services for higher downlink data rates. Cingular noted that the pending acquisition of AT&T Wireless gives the company enough spectrum to roll out UMTS nationwide.
