The Trip to Oxford

Posted on Monday 10 May 2004

I spent Thursday and Friday last week driving to Oxford, OH, to pick up JT after his first year at Miami University. He’s decided to spend the summer in Oxford, taking classes and working rather than moving back home after nearly nine months on his own. I’m very proud of his decision and his motivation to retire some requirements and raise his GPA to a level that he finds acceptable. Of course, the upside for him is that he’ll be living in his own apartment; not totally on his own yet, but another step closer. No ‘rents, no RAs, no problem. :-)

Other thoughts:

  • The southern part of Fairfield, OH, is a strip mall paradise. Sort of makes Route 17 in New Jersey and Rockville Pike here in Washington look like Rodeo Drive. The northern part of Fairfield is lovely, as is Hamilton.

  • The territory between Hamilton and Oxford is rural, and driving it at night the bugs were so thick that they sounded like rain on the windshield. Not a good time to be on a motorcycle without a full face shield, methinks.
  • Note to the two deer on Route 73 Thursday night: thanks for leaving that gap between you. Glad none of us was hurt, other than the slightly elevated heart rate I’m sure we all had for a few minutes.
  • Where else but in a college town would you find a bike with a remote control? :-)
