RIM Posts Solid Results, Announces Stock Split

Research in Motion reported very good financial results for its fiscal Q4 2004 and for the year. For Q4 the company said it earned US$50.2M on revenue of $210.6M; after set-asides related to its patent lawsuit and taxes the company posted net income of $31.1M. For the year, RIM reported income of $51.8M on revenues totaling $594.6M. All the numbers are significant improvements over same periods last year.

The company said it now counts over 1M BlackBerry subscribers, having added 204K new users in Q4. RIM predicts that it will add 250K users this quarter. Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that over 50 cellular carriers now sell BlackBerry, and he expects another 25 to begin selling this year; the company anticipates over 10K retail outlets will sell the handhelds and service. Balsillie also told Dow Jones that 2005 will be a “breakout” year for BlackBerry in Asia, including a launch in India soon.

RIM announced that it will use a special dividend to split its shares 2-for-1. The company said it will send an additional share to each shareholder for each share currently held. After the split the company will have 184.8M shares outstanding.
