More Obfuscation From The TETRA Camp

Motorola proudly announced today that London’s Metropolitan Police (commonly called ‘Scotland Yard’) has chosen the MTH800 ‘terminal’ for use on the UK’s TETRA network. Reading the news about it or reading Motorola’s press release about the device itself never gives you a clear picture of what this ‘terminal’ really is. For example, the press releases [...]

RIM Adds Motorola to Licensees

RIM announced that it has signed a license agreement for BlackBerry technology with Motorola. In its one paragraph press release about the agreement RIM said that Motorola will be able to enable “specific mobile phones” to access BlackBerry services, although it did not name the models. RIM has moved aggressively to license its technology; it [...]

Cingular Launches Nationwide GSM/GPRS BlackBerry

Last week Cingular announced the nationwide availability of BlackBerry voice and data services using its GSM/GPRS network and RIM’s 6280 and 7280 devices. The handhelds, which operate in the 850 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, will operate in all of Cingular’s US regions as well as in GSM 1800 systems overseas.
Cingular has had [...]

Apple

For weeks the Mac rumor sites have been predicting that Apple will announce new versions of its PowerBook and iBook notebooks today. Some of the sites have been fairly conservative, while others have come out with detailed specs. But what’s really funny about watching them is that they ALL missed Apple’s announcements at the National [...]

Bloom Back on the Telecom Rose?

At least in China (via SCMP):
“An online buyer paid nine million yuan (US$1.1 million) for a cell phone number on a Chinese auction site, state press reported on Tuesday.
“A deal for the number 135 8585 8585, which has a similar pronunciation in Chinese to ‘let me be rich, be rich, be rich, be rich,’ was [...]

RIM Revenue Mix Changing…Again

Although most of the world has come to know RIM relatively recently, the comapny has been around the wireless data business since long before BlackBerry became their flagship product. In its earliest days RIM made hardware gateway products for Mobitex networks; they later added OEM radiomodems for Mobitex and DataTAC networks, then even made a [...]

Interview with Mike Lazaridis

The current edition of Business Week has an interview with RIM’s Mike Lazaridis on the occasion of the company’s 20th anniversary. Worth the read, especially the bits about his philanthropy.

Another Quasi-Launch of UMTS Services

Belgian GSM operator-UMTS spectrum licensee Proximus announced that they have begun to offer commercial UMTS services. However there are several caveats in their announcement. First, following the model of its shareholder Vodafone, the company is only offering data services targeted at business customers. Second, it is only offering limited coverage in six Belgian cities; Proximus’ [...]

RIM Posts Solid Results, Announces Stock Split

Research in Motion reported very good financial results for its fiscal Q4 2004 and for the year. For Q4 the company said it earned US$50.2M on revenue of $210.6M; after set-asides related to its patent lawsuit and taxes the company posted net income of $31.1M. For the year, RIM reported income of $51.8M on revenues [...]

Vodafone Sweden Joins UMTS Price War

I have noted before how Hutchison started a cellular price war in the UK when they failed meet their growth targets; Hutch also cut prices in Hong Kong several times within weeks of launching there. DoCoMo has gone to flat-rate pricing for data in Japan, and now Vodafone in Sweden has cut its UMTS data [...]
