Nextel Begins Broader Band Data Trials

Posted on Friday 6 February 2004

US iDen operator Nextel has begun a six month trial of broader band wireless data services in Raleigh-Durham, NC. The company is deploying Flarion’s OFDM service and will equip customers with either a radiomodem for desktop machines or a PC Card radiomodem for notebooks. Flarion describes its technology as comparable to CDMA 1X EV-DO or EDGE.

Nextel has also set up a Web site for its trial customers but has not officially commented on the move. The company announced last November that it would deploy an upgrade to its data services, dubbed Wi-DEN, that would quadruple airlink data rates to 56kbs.
