NFC gains standards approval

Posted on Monday 8 December 2003

Sony announced that both the ISO and IEC have granted standards approval to Near Field Communication (NFC), the extremely short range (20cm) high frequency radio technology co-developed with Philips. The new standard, known as ISO/IEC IS 18092, allows wireless devices to communicate at speeds up to 424kbs at 13.56MHz. The companies said last year that the technology could be used to extend the capabilities of contactless smart cards or to equip consumer electronic devices with better short range communications. “Think of it as a smart card technology in a device allowing consumers to transfer data and pay for services,” a Sony spokesman said at the time.
