The heads of two large cellular networks, Vodafone and mmO2, gave the world some insight as to some of the problems with UMTS. Most network operators blame handset shortages or vague problems with infrastructure when they are confronted with failure to live up to their earlier promises of availability.
But Vodafone’s Arun Sarin, speaking at Telecom World 2003 in Geneva, said, “We are fully committed to 3G. We are investing a couple of billion pounds every year on 3G. We are also investing much time and energy to make sure that the interoperability between all vendors exists in handsets and infrastructure. We are addressing the software and hardware needed to make sure that when we launch our service, it works.” He still didn’t name a launch date for any of his company’s networks.
Sir Peter Erskine, CEO of mmO2, said, “We have seen from some of the early launches of 3G that it just isn?t ready yet. The handover between 2.5 and 3G doesn?t work. There is no point in launching technology before customers are ready to use it…We are certain 3G will be big. The question is, when?
